Mount Horeb Area School District offers a comprehensive Human Growth and Development curriculum to students in grades 4K-12. The overall goal is to provide students with comprehensive, scientifically/medically accurate, developmentally appropriate information about relationships, sexuality, gender identity and reproduction. Students will develop skills to effectively advocate for the welfare of their own body, growth, and development. Topics of wellness and health care will be infused into discussions. Educators and presenters will make every effort to ensure that all presented content and discussions occur in a safe and respectful environment.

POLICY #341.31 "Human Growth and Development"
Human Growth and Development Guide - Updated 2021
Per Wisconsin Statute sec. 118.019, parents are allowed to exempt their child from instruction in human growth and development with a written request to the teacher or principal. This is referred to as an “opt-out” policy. Wisconsin Statute sec. 118.01(2)(d)2c permits pupils to be exempted from instruction on physiology and hygiene, STDs, symptoms of disease, and the proper care of the body if their parent files a written request with the teacher or school principal. Schools will provide parents with an opt-out form when they provide them with the HGD curriculum outline and alternate resources that are offered to students that opt out.
